...dark is not enough.

We created this ezine for two main reasons. First, we love horror in all of its many forms. Second, we believe Horror is on the cusp of finally being recognized as mainstream literature. The Golden Age of Science Fiction occurred from the late 30's through the 50's. We believe we are currently living in the Golden Age of Horror. Many great writers have come before us to get us to this point, and we want to help you become a recognized part of it.

We do this by exploring the human condition and classic morality plays within the bounds of horror. The protagonist can be good or bad and win or lose. The ending doesn't have to be happy or sad, but some component of the story must be unsettling, disturbing, dark in order to be classified horror. Read more of what we are looking for and what we don't want on our Guidelines page.

While we welcome professional writers, our goal is to assist new writers by providing personal responses with any rejections and some recommendations for improving their story. Submissions that are very close but need some work may be selected for a rewrite with assistance from one of our editors.

Useful tips on getting to the point of publication:
Use spell check; read it out loud; turn off your smart quotes; get feedback from someone; join a writing group; but most of all, keep writing! You don't have to be a published author to be a professional, but being professional will help you get published.

Currently, we are a paid market with a flat fee of $25 per story along with one of our Necrotic Tissue T-Shirts, which has a $24 dollar monetary value, but whose ownership is priceless. The reason for the flat fee is to help new horror writers qualify to become affiliate members of the Horror Writers Association (HWA). Currently the minimum requirements are the publication of a horror story of at least 500 words for a fee of no less than $25 (Please go to the HWA website for further details).

Our long-term goal is to get enough subscribers to draw web site advertising for the publication so that we can increase our payments to professional rates (which are currently 5 cents per word) and to be considered a professional publication by the HWA.
